In The Summer Time When The Weather Is Hot

Seattle Warms Up To Summer

In The Summer Time When The Weather Is Hot Seattle Warms Up To Summer

Is the lyrics of a song that reminds a lot of Northwestern sailors of the great summers sailing in the Northwest.  Thursday June 11th at the Elliot Bay Down Town Sailing Series was better than the song.  The temperatures were in the high 70’s perfectly clear skies and a light breeze, although sometimes a little too light, greeted about 60 boats for this now famous event.  This event is not designed for the hard core racer that practices every maneuver and studies the rules and wind shifts.  This event is geared towards the back bone of our sport, having fun on the water.  About half the boats use spinnakers and of those three quarter of them are using a spinnaker dousing sock.  There are about 20% that use their motors to catch up with the rest of the fleet.  To win you have to be lucky, they draw 1st through 3rd out of a hat.

The Down Town Sailing Series is on its 6th year.  The courses are a parade around Elliot Bay in Down Town Seattle in front of all the luxury hotels and water front restraints and back up to the finish.  It does not end there. Check out this Video  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erPgS6-eFww .They have a fully hosted party with Beer, Wine, Sodas, Snacks, and Grilled Hot Dogs for everyone.  Not to mention the live band!  This party goes until 10:30pm, and if you have spent any time in the Pacific Northwest in the summer you know that it is barely dark at 10:30pm.  This is truly a not to be missed event.

Ullman Sails and Elliot Bay Yacht Sales were the Weekly sponsor for this opening night to summer sailing.  The Band was Gertrude’s Hearse, an incedible local band with a with a huge following.  Ullman Sails provided over 400 free tee-shirts for this event as well.

If you get a chance to go sailing in Seattle this summer you will have to join the crowd at the Down Town Sailing Series and partake in the summer fun.
