Ullman Sails Long Beach Race WeekPresented by AcuraTue, 30th Jun 2009By Chuck Skewes  Sailors enjoying themselves at the party On June 26th through the 28th 2009 Long Beach Yacht Club and Alamitos Bay Yacht Club co-hosted Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week the last of the 4 race Ullman Sails Inshore Championship Series. This was 3 days of high quality racing and great after race parties. The first day of racing was an easy 8-10 knots of wind, sunny skies and flat seas. The 18 classes had close racing all day on all 3 courses. With no typical Long Beach damage the sailors were able to enjoy the great after race party with incredible food supplied by Gladstones and great music played from the upper deck of the yacht club. Day two served up a little more wind to the typical Long Beach 15 knots. This tested crew and gear a little more and kept the night crew at Ullman Sails busy and out of the bar. The wind increased all day steadily and crews had to choose late in the day between their blades and genoas on the PHRF courses. At the end of the day the scores were very tight. Many of them tied like the J-120’s Caper and CC Rider. Some were dominating their class like the so successful Flying Tiger Mile High Klub and the J105 Current Obsession. The after race party was another great event with yet another great band at the pool area of Long Beach Yacht Club. Day three was a little more wind than the previous two days and a lot more action. With the winds topping 20 knots the sport boats were showing great speed on the runs and it tested the crews jibing abilities. A few boats like Viggo Torbenson’s Martella the IMX 38 came out and dominated in the breeze to come from behind and win their class. The Flying Tiger Mile High Klub did not have to sails the last race to win finishing the regatta with 5 bullets. The other boat to finish with 5 Bullets was Current Obsession the J105 in the largest fleet of the regatta at 13 boats. One thing these 4 boats have in common is their Ullman Sails. Ullman Sails was 1st or 2nd in almost all of the classes at this year’s event.
