The 2009 6 Metre World Cup was held in Newport, R.I. September 8-12 and hosted by Sail Newport and the New York Yacht Club. Boats from eleven countries and three continents started gathering in the weeks prior to the World Cup and the North American Championship was held the weekend prior for everyone to get a little last minute practice in.

The 6 Metre Class for the World Cup was sub divided into the Modern Division and Classic Division. Within the Classic’s there was a further subdivision with Classic Vintage boats using all Dacron upwind sails and original wood masts.

The World Cup was held in a variety of conditions starting off with lights winds the first day to 20+ knot days for Thursday and Friday’s racing. In the Moderns, Bob Cadranell sailing ‘Arunga’ took third for the series. Bob was using a full Ullman Sails upwind inventory and Arunga was first to the first weather mark in five of the eight races. These are the first generation designs and have proven to be extremely fast! In a class dominated by one sailmaker it’s nice to see the status quo rocked by the talented design team at Ullman Sails.
