Ullman Team Members Help Out:

As the 70’ sleds were waiting under postponement at the 2009 inaugural Campbell Cup Memorial Regatta in Long Beach California on October 24th Alchemy the Andrews 70 crew noticed a sea lion following them.  After closer attention it appeared like it wanted to hop on the boat.  It had a net around its neck that was constricting and cutting into the sea lions flesh.  It soon jumped up onto the stern of the boat appearing to have no fear of the 20 crew watching it.   It was very docile and would even approach a few of the crew.  On close examination it was clear that the net could not be pulled off and that if the net could be removed it was clear that the animal need more attention.

The crew on Alchemy made several calls in attempt to have someone come get the sea lion.  Finally the harbor patrol came back that they had contacted animal control.  The did not have a way to get the sea lion so Alchemy left the race course as the breeze started to fill in.  The crew brought the boat into the harbor masters dock stern first and with the help of the fire rescue team got the animal off the boat onto the dock where animal control delivered the sea lion to the Marine Mammal facility where it is now being treated.

The race committee from Long Beach Yacht Club delayed the sled start for Alchemy to return to the race course where they held 3 races that day.

The seal lion is now doing better and recovering at Marine Animal Rescue in Long Beach and should have a full recovery and be released back into the wild.

Here is a video of the rescue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c96Fh2YYlXc
