San Diego Hot Rums:

This years Hot Rum Series very well could be called the Blended Rum Series with the 70 degree weather and crystal clear skies that have greeted sailors on the first two event.  The second of the three race series was dealt 8-12 knots of wind and 140 boats competing.  The Hot Rums are a pursuit start with the slow boats starting nearly an hour ahead of the fast boats on a 15 mile race.  The finishes so far have been very tight with a mix of big and small finishing overlapped.  The largest boat racing is USA 11 the IACC Stars and Stripes down to a Melges 20.

The first leg of the race was a tight spinnaker reach that about 75% of the fleet made it all the way to the first mark with spinnakers up.  Then the broad run to the next mark where it appears that most of the boats made it there at the same time, causing a little bit of a bottleneck.  On the beat the fleet spread out a little and the fleet split coming back into the channel with shifty winds.  Dennis Conners on the CM 60 won the overall for the second straight race. He will try for a hat trick on December 6th.

With approximately half the fleet leaders using Ullman Sails this year it has been a great event for our customers.  The new FiberPath Sport was debut at this week’s event by winning its class aboard “Wild Bunch” the Wylie Wabbit.

Ullman Sails Team members were out photographing the event this week and will be again on the December 6th event.  Contact Ullman Sails to see if your boat was photographed and they will be glad to send you a resolution photo free of charge.
