Aquiring Cal 20's

Tacoma Yacht Club Sailing Aquiring Cal 20's

The Tacoma Yacht Clubs Sailboat Committee chaired by Jon Thompson and Burr Hope have been working on ideas on how to breath life back into Tacoma Yacht club sailing. The first was to offer more races and encourage more participation in the cruising class. This seemed to be well received with participation slowly increasing in these events. The next was to propose an improved dry sail area on unused TYC property. This proposal was presented by Jon Thompson and accepted by the TYC board of Directors. The TYC Board  have directed Jon and Burr to gather information on material and labor costs for the new dry moorage area. The next was to purchase club boats.

Cal 20’s were chosen because of an active race fleet already on the West Coast, ease of sailing, and availability within the budget of TYC. All of these attributes have sparked a lot of interest with one boat already being purchased with another on the way, this is very likely the catalyst that will get seasoned racers along with new comers out on the water. Since the Cal 20 takes care of the two largest concerns of TYC members it will keep the cost of racing down and the need for crew.  This is just a few of the things that Tacoma Yacht Club is doing to increase participation in current and future events.  TYC is also considering future city outreach programs that the boats are well suited for and can get younger people into the sport.  For more information on the program contact Jon Thompson at (253) 732-0911 or Jthompson@UllmanSailsSeattle.com
