Jim Clinton

I started sailing and racing in 1944 on Alamitos Bay in Long Beach, CA. I was the original owner of Sabot #23 and competed out of ABYC along the West Coast from Santa Barbara to Coronado. At age 14 I moved up to Snipes and raced nationally in both the Junior and Senior divisions until college, when I competed on the University of California, Berkeley sailing team.

After a military career, highlighted by building a catamaran in Vietnam out of F4 fuel drop tanks, I joined the Coronado Yacht Club and began racing again. I owned a series of 5 keel boats: Cal25, Tartan 10, Ranger 33, Soverel 33 and Etchells 22.

In partnership, I purchased Ballas Sails in San Diego in 1980, was licensed by Ullman Sails International (USI) in 1984, and sold in 2007. Since 1980 I have raced with customers in numerous offshore events and Mexican distance races.

From 1986 until the present time, I also assisted Dave Ullman in the management of USI. Currently, I am a happy sales representative for Ullman Sails – San Diego and continue to enjoy my time in the boating industry.
