Nice day, no rain! Duwamish Head '10

The second race in the 09-10 South Sound Series is the Duwamish Head Race hosted by the Three Tree YC in Des Moines, WA on January 9th.

Light winds were in the forecast and as the 80 boats headed out of the Marina there was little or no wind. The race committee postponed the start for two hours and finally sent the cruising fleet then racing fleets off in a light Northwesterly (very light!) and a building ebb.

The fleets got mixed up quite nicely in the light and shifty conditions. The boats that escaped early to the West seemed to benefit the most and when the wind finally filled in from the Southeast spinnakers went up and with the push from the ebb the fleet marched up the Sound.

With darkness approaching, the race committee wisely shortend the race at the Duwamish Head marker. The second half of the race was good for the downwind flyers and the top 9 overall standings were dominated with Class A and B boats with Jon Thompson's Ullman powered Newport 33 'Teaser' taking the 10th overall spot from Class F.

It was a nice January day on the water and next up in the series is the Toliva Shoal Race February 13th, hosted by Olympia YC.
