Like all three CSS races, the start is off Shilshole and this race heads South to Three Tree Point, just north of Des Moines and back. The race features a reverse start sequence with the slower boats heading out at 9AM. Light southwesterly winds greeted the fleet on a dying ebb. Some boats from the earlier classes looked to have hooked up into a nice Westerly but it faded and most of these classes were stacked up at West Point fighting the tide and trying to keep moving. The boats that stayed West kept moving and ultimately took advantage of the Westerly fill popping spinnakers. Elliott Bay posed some challenges with the wind swinging all over the place for a while. Finally a weak but steady Westerly filled in and the boats in the middle of the track had better velocity than those who were East. The race committee wisely opted to finish the race at Three Tree Point with no complaints from the competitors since there was no way anyone was going to finish before the time limit! Ullman Sails powered boats did very well in the series with the Melges 32 Banshee taking first overall (FiberPath Main). Other U/S podium class finishers were: P04 – Gardyloo. Eric Nelson’s Henderson 30 (GPL carbon upwind inventory) – 2nd place P06 – Uno. Brad Butler and Paul Faget’s speedy Sierra 26 (FiberPath and GPL) – 2nd P08 J/105 – Last Tango. John Peterson takes delivery of his new FiberPath Jib winning Three Tree Point and 2nd for the series P09 2nd ‘Kiwi Express’. Reinhard Freywald’s Farr 1020 (FiberPath Main, paneled #1 and new Airx 650 spinnaker) 3rd ‘Lunch Box’. Greg Larsen’s Olson 30 (Race Dacron Main and GPL #1) P10 – Penetration. Chris Johnson’s San Juan 34 (GPL Main and #1, Airx Spin) 2nd P12 1st – Invader. Marty Gosil’s Thunderbird with full Ullman Class inventory 2nd – Smilin’ Jack. John Wade’s venerable Morgan 27 with Pentex paneled #1 Congrats to all! PSSR coming up next! This article was posted on Mon, 5th Apr 2010 |
