Marina Del Rey to San Diego Plankton does it again

The Marina Del Rey to San Diego Race is a tradition amongst a lot of sailors and a start to the 4th of July weekend.  With the 4th falling on Sunday the attendance was down slightly with 18 boats participating in this years race.  The race is 104 miles and usually down wind most of the way with great on shore breezes.  This year early July Southern California is experiencing a unique weather pattern and cloudy skies.  This brought light southerly breezes to the racers in this years event.

John Staff on his Viper 830 “Plankton” out of California Yacht Club has done this race many times over the years and is always a top competitor.  This year John won not only his division but first overall.

It was a slow race taking John Staff and crew 27 hours to finish the race.  John uses 100% Ullman Sails with a FiberPath GP Main and Jib and an Airx Red Line Spinnaker. For full results click here http://www.smwyc.org/pdf/SDResults2010.pdf
