CLEAN SWEEP & A RECORD TO BOOT

Horizon Takes It All

By Kelly Buchan

CLEAN SWEEP & A RECORD TO BOOT:

Congratulations to Jack Taylor & his crew aboard Santa Cruz 50 “Horizon” who accomplished an impressive feat at the 2010 Pacific Cup with a clean sweep, including first boat to finish, first boat in class D and first boat overall.  Fully powered by Ullman Sails inventory, the “Horizon” team also broke the record for the fastest Santa Cruz 50 to ever sail the 2070-nm distance race from San Francisco to Oahu, Hawaii.  Taylor and his crew crossed the finish line in Kaneohe Bay Friday night after 8 days, 11 hours, 46 minutes.

The staggered start sequence of Pacific Cup put “Horizon” in a good position from the beginning with a start on Thursday, July 8, 2010 in good breeze.  The early start time allowed Taylor and his crew to maintain speed and gauge distance on the fleet.  Taylor also took advantage of the navigation and sailing talents of the father-son duo, John Shampain and Erik Shampain (the One Design Manager at Ullman Sails Newport Beach).

The win at Pacific Cup is one of many races and regattas won by Taylor over the past couple of years, including first overall in division at 2009 Transpac.

Several other Ullman Sails customers took part in the 2010 Pacific Cup , which runs opposite years to the Transpac Race.  Congratulations to Team Furthur completing the double handed Pacific Cup on the Santa Cruz 27 setting a new record as the youngest combined age to do so with an average age of 21 years old.  Team Furthur chose Ullman Sails for their record breaking run.
