The 2011 Islands race will goo down as another great race around the Islands. This race will no doubt last as a regular event on everyone’s race calendar. Started under sunny skies and moderate breeze, upper #1 range that lasted all the way across the channel until the fleet sailed into the ominous fog bank at the West End, Catalina. From the boat I was on it was a beautiful sight watching the boats disappear into the thick fog, but also a little dread knowing that there were a lot of boat around us as well as a large rock to contend with.
The fog dissipated quickly once past the tip of Catalina, with skies clear the fleet sailed into the night on a spinnaker reach between the islands. We spotted a tremendous number of Porpoise that stayed with our boat for what seemed like half the distance of the reach to San Clemente.
The boats that stayed well south of San Clemente and gybed, stayed clear of the large wind shadow near the east end of the island and got into the new breeze for the reach into San Diego.
Another great race for what is sure to be a strong annual event. Well done NHYC and SDYC!Ullman Sails Customers had a great outing, here is a brief of their results.
