For the third year Ullman Sails was the title sponsor for Winter Vashon. 89 boats were registered and 85 came out to tackle the new counter clockwise course. The cruising fleet started first in a nice easterly and the Ullman powered N/M 68 owned by Gerald Parker and skippered by Jon Thompson quickly sailed away into the lifting fog.
Chris Winnard of Ullman Sails Seattle was on the WV race committee team headed up by Charley Rathkopf and got all 11 starts off smoothly. The best starts of the day had to go to Carl Buchan's 'Madrona' and Eric Nelson's Henderson 30 'Gardyloo'. Both boats nailed the line perfectly!
As the fleet made it's way North the conditions lightened the race was ultimately shortened at the North end due to no wind in Colvos passage. Had the fleet been sent on the traditional clockwise course no one would have finished so there were no complaints on the change. Next year will be back to clockwise, let's hope for solid breeze!
