The big boats made it in near record time but it was the smaller boats in most classes that came away from Mexico with the gold and silver. It was a reunion in the maxi fleet of all the sleds reappearing on the scene lead by the maxi sleds like Magnitude 80, Akela, and Medicine Man followed by 70 footers Pyewacket, Grand Illusion, OEX, Taxi Dancer, and Alchemy, but in the end it was the Andrews 52 It’s O.K. with Ullman Sails taking first followed by Stars and Stripes the CM600 and the famous Staghound R/P 50 finishing 3rd after winning two of the last 3 years. Staghound carries a 100% Ullman Sails inventory.
Horizon lived up to it’s name by dominating the 50 footer class. Horizon owned by Jack Taylor a long time Ullman powered boat has been very successful in this as well as most offshore races. John Staff with Plankton also ruled his fleet with 100% Ullman Sails winning by over an hour. John is a veteran of the Ensenada Race on these little sport boats starting with his Cheetah 30.
With the race so short this year a lot of boats turned around and delivered their boats to San Diego to get ready for Yachting Cup the following weekend. This made the party slightly lower attendance and a lot calmer than normal making easier to hear the awards.
Another successful Newport to Ensenada race for Ullman Sails customers is now in the books and the fleet is now off to Yachting Cup hosted by San Diego Yacht Club.
