Class 1 had 5 boats Cazador a Transpac 52, Staghound a R/P 50, Alchemy and Elainium Andrew 70’s and Little Wing a Concordia 47. Shortly after the start on the 1 mile beat to the offset mark, Cazador and Staghound took the lead with Alchemy close behind. Cazador and Staghound took a low lane to the North and Alchemy went slightly further west to find a passing lane around the slower boats and a little more breeze.
After about 20 minutes Alchemy put up their new Code 0 and started closing on the two leaders. An hour into the race Alchemy had taken the lead by 2-3 minutes over the Transpac 52 Cazador and continued to extend. Staghound stuck to Cazador holding their own. Staghound then set their Code 0 in the last few miles of the race and closed on Cazador easily saving their time on the faster Cazador. In the end it was Alchemy taking Class 1 and the Overall. Staghound was a close second by 45 seconds. The common thread between these two boats is that they both Used 100% Ullman Sails to achieve their victory. Ullman Sails code 0’s have been dominate in offshore racing with most of the sleds sailing Transpac this year using the Ullman Sails Code 0’s and Asymmetric Series spinnakers as well.
