Cabrilo 1 January 2013 Ullman Sails off to a great start to the new year
Velos Sailing By Hotel Del On Coronado

With sunny cool weather light winds and 45 boats the Cabrilo 1 race hosted by SWYC turned out to be a great race and a fantastic day of sailing.  The Cabrilo 1 race starts at the mouth to San Diego Bay and goes around the North and Middle Coronado Islands just into Mexican waters.
The winds were nonexistent at the scheduled start time but within 15 minutes the wind filled in and kept building.  By the time Class 1 boats started it was 10-12.

As the wind filled it shifted right making the boat end of the starting line very favored and very crowded.  Several boats got peeled off on the committee boat and others fouled but most boats behaved and got off clean.
It was a tight reach to the island.  Some boats setting spinnakers early and sailing low, others setting code 0’s and some electing to stay in genoas until the island.  The wind around the island was steadier than usual and boats made it around without much of a transition.
The angle back to the finish was just about a perfect upwind angle for most boats with Bud and Alchemy leading the pack followed close by Condor Cazador and Staghound.  Most of the smaller boats finished just after dark but before the wind died.
Staghound won class 1 followed by Alchemy. Both Staghound and Alchemy were powered by 100% Ullman Sails. J Almighty won the J120 fleet flying their new Ullman GPL Genoa and they took the overall.  Ullman Sails were the winners in 3 of the 6 classes and were second in two of the remaining 3 classes.  Ullman Sails also took the top 3 overall spots.
Here are full results.
